As a statutory organisation, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is required to provide information in an understandable format to all its users. This includes providing information in an audio-tape format, Braille and in other languages if requested.

That doesn’t mean you should immediately go away and translate every single piece of patient information into the seven main languages or into a format suitable for deaf, hard-of-hearing or blind people. This can be prohibitively expensive.

Instead, we suggest you ensure that the following lines are placed at the back of every leaflet or document you produce, the idea being that you put in the contact details of the person who is responsible for the production of the document and they deal with any subsequent requests for translated or other text.

The first line is self-explanatory and is in large type, aimed at people with sight or hearing problems. The line below is provided first in English and in Gaelic and then in the seven main ethnic minority languages in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area: Mandarin, Farsi, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu, Turkish and Polish.

Just cut and paste the text on to your document and fill in the correct details A space has been left after or (in the case of Farsi, Arabic and Urdu) before the colon (:) to allow you to put in the appropriate name and contact details of the person responsible for the document or you put one at the bottom of the page. It will be this named person who will deal with any requests for the document to be in another language or format.
